Homework: Tower of Books Challenge
Click the buttons to access --------> Dear Parents, Welcome to this year’s homework: the Tower of Books Challenge. It’s an independent reading challenge for your child! There is a lot of research out there that suggests there is no correlation between homework and achievement levels in elementary students. So - my main purpose and goal is not to send home busy work, but to get kids reading books and enjoying reading with others. I hope you will find this to be fun, engaging, and meaningful for your nightly time at home. Here’s how it works: Your child’s goal is to read all 20 books from the categories listed on the next page by the end of the first quarter, October 30th. He or she will check off one of the boxes each time a book is read. After checking off a box, it’s time for them to add to… the Tower of Books! 1. Finish the book 2. Fill in the book information on your tower poster (Title, Author, Category) 3. Feel free to decorate the box if you’d like (lightly, so I can still read it) 4. Complete a small yellow Summary Sheet for each book (Name it, Verb it, Finish it) and bring to school. (See back of page for Name it, Verb it, Finish it instructions). 5. Continue stacking them up! How high can the tower get? Consider an incentive for every fifth book your child completes. Here are a few ideas:
Sincerely, Mrs. Payton Homework is sent home every Friday in a red folder. The folder is to be returned the following Friday so I can put new spelling words in it. The folder is also a great place to send in yellow summary sheets for your tower challenge! First Quarter Challenge: Tower of 20 Books due by October 30th.
